Sandstone Repairs
So much of the west of Scotland is built from sandstone, and it weathers in ways that need a considered hand. Faces spall and flake, joints erode, and past repairs in the wrong material can do more harm than the weather. We repair and restore sandstone to keep traditional stone buildings sound and looking as they should.
Repair rather than replace, where we can
Sandstone that looks past saving is often repairable. Depending on how far the decay has gone, individual stones can be repaired in place, cut back and dressed, or — where a stone is genuinely beyond repair — replaced. Keeping as much of the original stone as possible is usually the right instinct, both for the building and the budget.
Common sandstone work
Repairing spalled and flaking faces, replacing badly decayed stones, dressing back damaged sections, and repointing eroded joints in a mortar suited to the stone. On solid stone walls the pointing mix matters: too hard a mortar traps moisture in the stone and accelerates decay, so the specification is chosen to work with the building rather than against it.
A sympathetic finish
The aim with stone repair is that the work settles into the wall rather than standing out from it — matching the character of the surrounding stone and coursing so the repair reads as part of the building. We take the time to get that right.
